The backbone of modern telecom infrastructure consists of optical fibre-based systems in combination with wireless technology, some of it on satellites to provide global coverage. Medical applications of photonics and microwave technology are numerous, and measurement applications include radar, environmental monitoring and radio astronomy. In space science, satellite systems based on microwave technology are used for astronomy, remote sensing of the Earth and space geodesy.
