Although my plans for a major in Biology are not concrete, I know I am interested in 

learning more about it. Right now I am considering pursuing medicine, but I hope to 

take a wide variety of classes at Georgetown.   

This past summer I worked alongside Dr. Ganeles, a practicing oncologist and 

hematologist, to explore my interest in medicine. As her assistant, I met and visited 

with patients who were diagnosed with cancer or various blood disorders. Before 

we entered a patient’s room, Dr. Ganeles would give me a brief summary of the 

patient’s medical history. As Dr. Ganeles examined patients and recounted their 

stories to me, I could imagine a future for myself in the medical field. I was moved 

and inspired by their stories and was fascinated with the problem solving aspects of 

the job as a physician.

One day, Dr. Ganeles allowed me to view a blood sample under an electronic 

microscope. The sample was taken from a woman who had previously been 

diagnosed with leukemia. After we scanned the slide, we were pleased to find no 

leukemic cells. I was able to witness Dr. Ganeles delivering the wonderful news to 

that woman who was then in remission.

However,  other patients weren’t so lucky. Many of them had endured several 

rounds of chemotherapy treatment and radiation. They suffered from different side 

effects, or their conditions worsened. Despite the doubt and pain, the patients 

remained upbeat and optimistic; their resilience greatly inspired me to maintain a 

positive attitude as well. I want to make a difference in the health of people, whether 

that’s through becoming a physician, surgeon, or medical researcher.

At Georgetown, I know I would have the resources to achieve this goal, 

especially through Georgetown’s Early Assurance Program (EAP). Being able to 

enter Georgetown’s School of Medicine directly after finishing Georgetown College 

is an opportunity to expand on my learning as well as build on the relationships I 

form during my time as an undergrad.  I’m highly interested in this program. I think 

my experience would be richer if I were able to attend both undergraduate and 

graduate school at Georgetown.

It is important to me to make the most of my college experience. Georgetown 

has a myriad of clubs and organizations that I would love to be involved with. I am 

particularly interested in joining an a cappella group such as the GraceNotes, or the 

club field hockey team. Additionally, I think the accessibility to our nation’s capital 

would be exciting. I’m interested in public policy surrounding national health care 

and government’s role in the future of medicine. Certainly Georgetown has all the 

assets to provide me with a well-rounded and unique college experience.
