“Why us” school essay
学校: University of Chicago
When thinking about college, I am looking for several things: A tight-knit
learning environment rich with camaraderie, a wealth of resources and a home
away from home. University of Chicago is a perfect blend of all of these aspects.
The student to faculty ratio is an important reason why I love University of
Chicago. Coming from an independent private school, I prefer the small discussion-
based seminar style that is prevalent at UChicago. The Core curriculum is
particularly appealing as a means to gain a broad and well-rounded background in
various academic subjects. I want to be exposed to lots of different subject areas to
help me choose a major.
I am particularly fond of the housing system that creates a tight-knit
community. I like the mix of upper and lower classmen, along with faculty in a
home-like environment, which I think promotes developing relationships from the
very beginning of a student’s time at UChicago. Guaranteed student housing for four
years is important to me to maintain a connection with my peers.
I am also interested in doing research as an undergraduate, and understand
UChicago has lots of opportunities to do so. I would be thrilled to be a summer
intern at NORC, and be a part of the forefront of social research.
I am passionate about singing, and I know UChicago offers lots of a cappella
groups and other musical groups that I could get involved with. I would love to be
part of the Ransom Notes, for example. I have spent the last 4 years as part of a choir
and I want that during my college years as well.
The university’s location in downtown Chicago is also ideal for exposure to
the arts that I look forward to. Opportunities for internships, jobs, and a wealth of
academic resources exist all around UChicago. I can’t wait to explore them.
