Breaching the tenets of quintessential education, Penn refreshingly bridges the gap between science and art. For example, Dr. Kaplan’s class Music and the Brain will allow me to interlace modern neuroscience with ancient musical traditions. Moreover, the Biological Basis of Behavior Program (BBB) offers contemporary courses like ABCS Everyday Neuroscience, an opportunity to both hone my teaching skills and instill a love of neuroscience in local high school students.

Furthermore, the interdisciplinary approach to teaching at Penn will enable me integrate various perspectives into all aspects of neurobiology. During my rising senior summer, I spent my time helping out at the Diagnostic Imaging Centre at Markham Stouffville Hospital – an experience which illustrated both the strengths and shortcomings of the Canadian health care system. With courses like Health Policy: Health Care Reform and the Future of the American Health System, the BBB and Health Services Management Minor will allow me to further explore the world health care.

The research opportunities at Penn are unrivaled – liberal research funding through CURF means that revolutionary research opportunities alongside renowned faculty are available all year round. From developing the first general-purpose electronic computer to discovering the Australia Antigen that is used to treat hepatitis B, research at Penn has always positively and profoundly impacted lives around the world. During my junior year, my work on biofuel allowed me to find a solution to the trash crisis in Lebanon through the use of microorganisms to ferment household organic waste. In the Penn spirit, I hope to continue to conduct meaningful research to benefit the world.

I’ve always had a penchant for striking up a conversation with new people and Penn is bustling with stories to share. Whether it’s a laidback morning chat on last night’s episode of Homeland over an omelet at English house or a heated debate at 1920 Commons, the possible discussions – like the food options – are endless.

Boasting over 450 student-run clubs, Penn will nurture my love for creating connections. 

Outside of the classroom, I’ll be able to make new friends and give back to the community through programs like WPTP. I can share my love for my history and culture with others by establishing an Armenian Society, foster debate with other politically charged students as part of UPMUNC, and even help other Quackers become quasi-MasterChefs as a member of Penn Appétit.

With a student body hailing from 68 different countries, an eclectic community, vibrant social scene, and an intense focus on interweaving theory and practice, the University of Pennsylvania puts forth the intellectual gastronomy of the world - and I’m dying to get a taste.
