Breaching the tenets of quintessential education, JHU refreshingly bridges the gap between science and art. The department of History of Science and Technology (HOST) offers fascinating courses like professor Kingsland’s Ecology, Health, and the Environment, an opportunity study the life sciences in context with the immediate environment. Moreover, professor Bernick’s class Leonardo da Vinci: Between Art and Science will allow me to interlace modern science with 15th century art. Not to mention, with no core curriculum holding me back, I can venture into the worlds of international relations and anthropology alike. The multidisciplinary approach to teaching at JHU will enable me integrate a global and historical perspective into all aspects of the biological sciences.

The research opportunities at JHU are unrivalled – liberal research funding through DURA, PURA, and the Woodrow Wilson award means that revolutionary research opportunities alongside renowned faculty are available all year round. From cultivating human stem cells to treating sickle cell anemia, research at JHU has always positively and profoundly impacted lives around the world. During my junior year, my work on biofuel allowed me to find a solution to the trash crisis in Lebanon through the use of microorganisms to ferment household organic waste. In the JHU spirit, I hope to continue to conduct meaningful research to benefit the world.

Furthermore, I’ve always had a penchant for striking up a conversation with new people and JHU is bustling with stories to share. Whether it’s a laidback morning chat on last night’s episode of Homeland over an omelet at Fresh Food Café or a heated debate at Nolan’s on 33rd, the possible discussions – like the food options – are endless.

Boasting over 400 student-run clubs, JHU will nurture my love for creating connections. 

Outside of the classroom, I’ll be able to make new friends and give back to the community through programs like HopServe50 and the Tutorial Project. I can share my love for my history and culture with others by establishing an Armenian Society, foster debate with other politically charged students as part of JHUMUN, and help other Hoppies become quasi-MasterChefs as a member of the Cooking Club. Perhaps after a Student Government Association meeting, I’ll go cheer for the Blue Jays at Homewood Field or even attend an Octopodes concert at Bloomberg Auditorium. With a student body hailing from 58 different countries, an eclectic community, vibrant social scene, and an intense focus on interweaving theory and practice, Johns Hopkins University puts forth the intellectual gastronomy of the world - and I’m dying to get a taste
