As someone who is interested in working with people and in humanitarian efforts, the skills of understanding and analyzing those around me and the state of the countries in which I live is very important for me. These are exactly the skills that USC is going to give me when I major in either NGOs and Social Change or Economics. The war and terror that are currently occurring in and around Turkey, and the conditions of poverty that exist have influenced me to focus on areas of international security and development. In the future, I would like to improve upon the Give A Hand Organization and learn how to make the most impact on the society. USC will give me the tools to achieve these goals.
Also, as seen by the Renaissance Scholar Distinction, USC does not limit its students to one field of study, but it respects those with multiple interests. With its Core Requirements, USC lets me take classes in areas I wouldn’t otherwise experience and makes me a well-rounded citizen. Since sitting for the first time around the round table of my Humanities class, discussing if Achilles was the greater hero or Hector, I always dreaded losing these discussions when I went to college. I have always valued small class sizes and the heated debates that arose from these classes. As a result, when I saw the Thematic Option honors program, I knew that I would be able to find everything I am looking at USC.
