While each may have different backgrounds and circumstances, every single successful USMA cadet has some similarities. Although tangible skills are necessary to achieve success, many aspects of an Army officer cannot as easily be classified. Through watching the students who enter West Point, and then seeing the officers who are produced, three main qualities have stood out to me personally.

The first of these qualities is dedication. By attending the US Military Academy, an individual commits to four years of education, and five years of commitment to the Army afterwards, which in and of itself requires dedication to the purpose of service and the ideals of the military. Once in the Army, one must lead with dedication to the mission at hand, and the safety of the men and women under command. To carry out a task with the best intentions and the best level of ability, it is integral to have intrinsic dedication. Once an individual raises his or her right hand to take an oath of service, they pledge allegiance to the flag in a whole new way. That oath epitomizes the duty of a successful Army officer. 

The second quality is honor. The cadet honor code dictates the basic necessities of conduct in the Army. A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do. These three options should never occur in the mind of a true and honest cadet. Holding oneself to high moral standards is the surest way to gain respect. Respect is a two-way street, and if you do not show respect through honesty to yourself and to those around you, how can they be expected to do the same. Honor and integrity go hand in hand; both are equally necessary in a successful Army officer.

The third quality is patriotism. This should already be understood, but during service to the United States of America, the only interest being served should be hers. Patriotism means to respect the flag, those who have sacrificed to preserve it, and the freedom that it represents. The reason for service comes from that same respect and preservation. So, patriotism is the reason to become a successful Army officer.
