Founded in 1994, the National Dong Hwa University (NDU) merged with the National Hualien University in 2008, and comprises two main campuses. The first is in Taiwan’s Shoufeng township in the Papaya Creek Delta region of Hualien County. Located north of the Tropic of Cancer and south of Hualien City, it is the largest flat land university site in Taiwan. Ringed by a coastal and central mountain range, this campus is renowned for its beautiful, picturesque setting and clean air. Ring-necked pheasants, NDU’s mascots, are often seen roaming the woodland and grassland in the grounds. The second campus is situated in the Meilun district of Hualien City, close to Hualien airport. There are eight colleges; the College of Science and Engineering, the College of Management, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Hua-Shih College of Education, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Environmental Studies, the College of Indigenous Studies, and the College of Marine Sciences. The latter is based at the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium in the Chechung township in Pingtung County, a five-hour drive from NDU’s main campus. The College of Indigenous Studies (established in 2001) was Taiwan’s first aboriginal school on ethnic studies and it is the nucleus for research into Tawainese and Austronesian ethnicity. Facilities available to students include: a golf driving range, swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), sports fields and pitches, a gymnasium, convenience stores and restaurants. NDU is highly selective in its admission policy and relies on entrance examinations and past academic records. About 20-30 per cent of those who apply are accepted to study.
