Welcome to Ireland, Dublin and University College Dublin
University College Dublin is a research university in Dublin, Ireland. It is Ireland's largest university with a student population of 32,000 students. The university originally had faculties across Dublin city, but all of the faculties have since congregated at a 133 hectare campus at Belfield, 4km south of the city centre. The university can trace its history back to 1854 with the foundation of the Catholic University of Ireland. It was established as University College Dublin in 1880 and received its charter in 1908. The institution is made up of six colleges including arts and humanities; business; engineering and architecture; health and agricultural sciences; social sciences and law and science. There are also a number of research institutes at the university including the Complex and Adaptive Systems Laboratory, the Centre for Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Investigation and the UCD Earth Institute. The university also has a number of research partnerships with univeristy across Ireland and with Irish businesses such as Trinity College Dublin, Sligo IT, the University of Limerick and the Armagh Observatory. There are over 60 sports clubs at the university with 28 sports scholarships awarded annually. There are also more than 60 student societies that cover many different hobbies and interests including the arts society, the commerce and economics society, the classical society, and the maths society. The oldest society is the literary and historical society which is currently in its 160th session. University College Dublin has two student newspapers that are published on campus, the news-based University Observer and the College Tribune.
