One of South Korea’s 10 core national universities, Kangwon National University is located in Chuncheon, capital of the northern province of Gangwon, known as a "leisure city" and is roughly an hour by road or rail to the north of Seoul. Formed as an agricultural college in 1947, it admitted its first postgraduates in 1968 and attained national university status in 1978. It has offered medical degrees since 1997, opened a university hospital in 2000 and in 2006 merged with Samcheok University, adding faculties of information technology and veterinary medicine. Its motto of "Sil-Sa-Gu-Si" translates as "seek for the truth from reality". It sells itself on the basis of a "safe and clean living environment and inexpensive living costs" and aims to "actively open our university to the local community and industry". A student roll approaching 40,000 is divided between 20 colleges, 133 departments and nine graduate schools and it is one of Korea’s nine designated National Business Colleges. Aside from the main site in Chuncheon, there are satellite campuses at Samcheok and Dogye. It claims the highest graduate employment rate of any of the national universities. In 2018 it was one of 12 universities awarded a government-funded Information and Communications Technology research centre, and plans for 2019 include the opening of a graduate department in peace studies. KNU researchers have been involved in projects such as using artificial rain as an anti-pollution measure, developing energy storage devices which can recharge in 20 seconds and helping to design the bobsled track for the 2018 Winter Olympics.
