Kuwait University was the first public higher education institution to be opened in the state of Kuwait. It was founded in 1966, when it constituted a College of Science, the College of Arts, the College of Education and the College for Women. There are now 17 colleges at the university, and female students are integrated. Courses at Kuwait University, known to its staff and students as Kuniv, range from dentistry to Islamic studies. Over 70 undergraduate courses and 70 postgraduate courses are on offer. Given the country’s oil industry, it’s unsurprising that Kuwait University has a college dedicated to engineering and petroleum. The highly specialised Petroleum Engineering Department studies state of the art technology in this field. Graduates from Kuwait University have gone on to become politicians, philosophers, theologians, engineers and leaders in the business world. Some of the best known alumni include the Kuwaiti Prime Minister Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and the model and entertainer Halema Boland. Kuwait is one of the smallest countries in the world. Despite its small size, it is the region’s top producer of patented innovations, thanks in part to research institutions like Kuwait University. Students in the city, which is less extravagant than many in the Gulf, can meander through its local market, visit one of the many art galleries or take a trip to the Middle East’s largest aquarium.
